File only recognized when on desktop

I emailed a coworker a spreadsheet and the icon showed as unrecognizeable
both in the email and when we moved it to the desktop. When opened in
outlook teh "select program to open" dialog came up and when opened from the
desktop it opened in excel fine....

Any thoughts?

Ed,

Make sure the attached file has the extension .xls. Check to see if other
..xls files will open from the desktop (or anywhere you attempt to open them
outside of Excel proper). If they won't, the Windows association ( .xls -
Excel ) is not set.
