File names

I have 2 computers both running XP Home. On one files with names containing
punctuation (such as AAAA-Test,file.doc) works normally, on the other the
same files cannot be accessed at all. They are shown in Windows Explorer, but
will not open, cannot be deleted or renamed. Visual Basic programs are also
affected . Again I cannot copy re-name or delete the files on the affected
machine, even though a "file list" control shows the existance of the file.
I'm sure it must be some sort of setting issue, but I cannot find anything
that relates to this.
Any help would be much appreciated

Why don't you delete that file from the command. Change to the directory
and type "DEL AAAA*.doc" (w/o quotes) provided that this pattern is
unique.

You need to tell us exactly what happens when you try to
open/rename/delete these files. Remember - we cannot see
your screen!

Hi Thanks for your interest and appologies for slow response.
In windows explorer on the affected machine if I double click a file with
punctuation nothing happens at all ie it does not open.
If I right click I get only the following options Open, Edit, New, Open
With, & Send To. This list is very much shorter than normal, and in
particular lacks entries Delete, Rename, Copy, or Properties.
Open gives no response, not even an error message.
Open with Wordpad gives the full path name and "access was denied".
Microsoft Office Document Imageing reports that the file is "locked for
exclusive use" which is totally untue.
When I run a VB5 program which attemps to open the file I get error code 53
which is "File not found"

A working unsecure OS is infinitely better than non-working secure OS.
Just spent 1 week cleaning up the mess WUpdate made preventing
hypothetical security problems. http://microscum.com/comsense/

As I said in my origional post I have two machines running XP one handles
these files OK the other does not. These files were created either on the
machine in my office in Scotland, and have been transfered as email
attachments to my office in London, or have been received as attachments from
various business contacts.

In most cases it seems that the default Word file name, which is the first
sentance of the document, has been accepted, and this frequently includes
such puntuation as commas. However other MS office documents (Project,
Publisher,Excel etc) are also affected.

This sounds all extremely confusing, leaving me unable to offer any
further advice. I can see three options for you:
a) See if one of the other respondents can work out what's going on.
b) Live with the problem.
c) Rebuild the machine.
d) Let me have a look at the machine.

If you wish to consider Option d), send a note to

None of these options are acceptable. Thanks anyway.
If I cannot find out why the two machines behave differently I will copy the
folders containing the files in question to my machine in Scotland (the one
unaffected by the problem), Edit the file names on that machine, and then
re-copy them back to the problem machine in London. This is a work around not
a solution, and as the total My Documents folder contains some 32 000 files
it will take some time.

As I said before thanks anyway.
