Cannot change or delete file

Walter R.

I am running WinXP 3.

I have a few files that I scanned into my computer from my scanner. Most
files can be manipulated just fine, but there is one very important .tiff
file that refuses to be renamed, deleted, display or anything. It just sits
there and cannot be modified or deleted in any way. It shows 5 MB ok.

How can I salvage this file or delete it?

Thanks

Log on as Administrator in Safe Mode, then try deleting it. If you can't the
please post the verbatim error message you see. Without this message we're
restricted to guessing. It would also be helpful to quote the name of the
file.

1. Try deleting it in Safe Mode.
2. If that doesn't work, either post back with the exact text of any error
message(s) you get when trying to delete the file.

This is the darnedest thing. I cannot get rid of this file!

I went into safe mode, but got the error message when I tried to open the
file: Access is denied

Then I tried to access is from "Run" in regular mode and Safe Mode: No
luck - "The above file name is invalid".

The file name is: 1861 Family Album - Supplement 25 Friedrich Feldhaus and
Lisett Feldhaus = Great Grandparents.tif

I installed "Unlocker" as recommended above. This program is supposed to
unlock a locked program with a menu when right-clicked. There is no
"Unlocker" displayed when I right click this abominable file, although the
right-click works fine on other files.

The file from Hell!

There is always a possibility that you are right when you say that this
problem is due to file name length.

However, I disagree because in nearly every process that calls a file
that has an invalid file name due to it's being too long, either comes
back with an error message telling you that this is the problem (as in
the 'Command Prompt' - The filename or extension is too long) or ignores
it completely (as in 'Send to,,,' mspaint.exe).

It does not come back with an error message like the one quoted -
"Access is denied" or "The above file name is invalid"

Thanks to all

I resolved the problem by transferring all valid files to a new folder and
then deleting the original folder with the defective file.

All OK now. Wasted a whole hour!
