file names (saving Word files without .doc extension)

Does saving a Word file without the .doc extension cause
problems with the file. We have a file repository that
using a revision number for the file instead of the .doc
for Word files. We have recently had problems with some
of those files becoming corrupted and I would like to know
if the file extension being changed might be part of the
problem.

You do not HAVE to save the files with a .doc file extension, but the file would no longer have a program associated with it.
The .doc extention tells the PC to open that with Word. You could name the document with a .123. You would then right-click on the document, select Open With... and tell your PC to ALWAYS use Word to open files with a .123 extension.

The problem is someone else may open the document with acrobat reader or WordPad. These other programs may change the formatting of the document.

Word can recognize its files no matter what you call them. Windows, on the
other hand, may get confused about its file associations.
