This is something I have not personally experienced before. All of a sudden,
about 2 weeks ago, I noticed that some of my icon types were not showing up
as usual. For example, my MSWord file icon were being displayed as word pad
and my text file icons are displayed as broken icons just like all my jpg¢s.

I¢ve double checked to make sure that the proper application is assigned to
the file type and still nothing. I refresh the window and desktop and
nothing. The file always display wrong.

Anyone encountered anything like that before, and if so do you know of a
resolution to this error?

Try deleting the Shell Icon cache (a hidden file). It may be corrupt.

TweakUI has an option to repair icons. Can be downloaded from:

I totally forgot to include my system specks:

WinXP Home / IE6.0 / HP Notebook with AMD Athlon64 4000+

ShellIconCache is for Windows 98 and Windows ME.

In Windows XP it is a hidden file called IconCache.db
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db

Thank you for getting back to me. I tried both methods, the repair icon and
deleting the shell file to no avail.

Can you think of anything else?

Here are some things to try.

Use TweakUI to Repair | Rebuild icons
[[Rebuilds all Explorer icons and removes unused Explorer icons from memory.
Rebuild icons when you find that Explorer is displaying the wrong icon for a
program or shortcut. Note that repairing icons may cause icons to lose any
custom positions.]]

In addition to Wesley's advice:

Or, manually edit the registry and set 'Shell Icon BPP' value to 16:
