file extensions

when I used to save a file in Word the file extension
never appeared in the name of the file under the Word
icon. I tried changing the name of the file without the
extension (.doc) and got all kinds of warnings that the
file may be unusable. This started when I was having some
trouble saving a copied web document.
I do not want the extension to show when saving a file, I
know I used to be able to do it, now I can't. Any help?

Depending on the version of Windows you have, click either "Tools", "Folder
Options" or "View", "Folder Options", click the "View TAB and check the
option to "hide extensions...".
