File extensions missing in windows explorer

I like to see the file extensions in windows explorer when in list view. My
old computer was like this but my new one does not have file extensions for
most items.

It does show .exe files, but not jpg/avi/txt

I am using XP home on a new laptop, and sp2 has been installed.

Hi,

Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options, and on the View tab disable
(uncheck) "hide extensions for known file types".

I have a new Dell with windows XP. I have never used XP before and I need
some help. When I try to open an attachment (in outlook express) that is a
picture, a box tops up that says "This file does not have a program
associated with it for performing this action. Create an associate in the
folder options control panel". I have gone to the control panel and I don't
see a folder options. When is it and how do I create an associate? I don't
know much about computers.
Thanks
