File Corruption Problems

A client of mine has some Excel spreadsheets that were setup before Word 97.
Over the years they have been converted to all of the new versions as they
upgraded. Recently while using Word 2003 they have been running into a lot
of file corruption issues while using these files. So much so that the files
would no longer open. The error message would say that there were to many
errors and the entire form was lost. We decided to convert the documents to
version 2007, and we have installed the compatibility pack on all of the 2003
computers. That seems to have resolved a lot of the problems, but one of the
computers is still having an issue. They have a laptop, and we have
installed the compatibility pack for 2007 documents. When we first install
the compatibility pack it works great. They are able to open the documents
without an issue. However as soon as the computer restarts it is as if the
compatibility pack was never installed. They can no longer open the 2007
docs until we reinstall the compatibility pack. It then works great until
the computer is restarted and then the same issue occurs. Any help would be
greatly appreciated!! This one has me stumped.
