In some occasions the converter fails. For example, I have seen it fail on a
file that contained (in a cell) the special slanted double quotes Word seems to
create.
Ask your client of he can save the file as 97-2003 file format.

I have already downloaded the conversion pack. This is why I won't be
changing to Office 2007 anytime in the near future. I am very good with a
computer, and if I have problems, what will the people who I am trying to
send something to in 2007 do.

I have a similar problem. I have Office Professional 2003. I downloaded the
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File
Formats. I still can't open *.xlsx files, getting dialogue box; "The
converter failed to open the file". What else can I do to read these files?

I have since downloaded Excel 2007 viewer also -> still can't open *.xlsx
files I've received in Outlook.

What happens if you save the file from Outlook first and then manually open the
saved copy from Windows Explorer?

We are having the same problems here with taxpayers sending us Office 2007
documents and the converter is no longer working. We sent one of the
documents to Microsoft for help and they feel that the files are "corrupt"
and they were able to do something to the file which then made my converter
work again. However, we still have the same problem with all of our
documents. Our users are e-mailing them home, converting them on Office 2007
and then sending them back. This is not a good solution!

Here is what the MS technician sent us...

Hi John,

I tried to open it as well, and there are problems with the file itself. It
wouldn't open in Excel 2007 without repairing it.

I ran a repair on it, and here's what was fixed:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>

- <recoveryLog
xmlns="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/spreadsheetml/2006/main">

<logFileName>error066240_01.xml</logFileName>

<summary>Errors were detected in file
'C:\Users\aaronvin\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.Outlook\RBUTJTVO\Denver personal property
schedule.xlsx'</summary>

- <additionalInfo>

<info>Excel completed file level validation and repair. Some parts of this
workbook may have been repaired or discarded.</info>

</additionalInfo>

- <removedParts summary="Following is a list of removed parts:">

<removedPart>Removed Part: Print options.</removedPart>

</removedParts>

</recoveryLog>

Does the file have a special Print option macro or add-on?

Attached is the repaired file -- does it open for you?
