I have a video file I downloaded that doesn't work. I
cannot delete it and I get a message saying that another
program is using it. I have tried everything I can think
of including trying to delete it in safe mode but I still
cannot delete it. Whenever I try to delete the file or
check the properties, I get huge load times and sometimes
a message pops up from the taskbar stating that windows
is increasing the size of the paging file. I have a
500mb page file and have never seen this message before.
I scanned for viruses but there was nothing. Any ideas?

Zak.

do you have any p2p programs on your computer? if you do
someone is probably downloading that file.

Hi,

I had the same problem. Somebody in the group suggested to delete the
entire Folder from the left side of the explorer. I emptied the said
folder and left only the AVI file in it and highlighted in left side
of explorer and deleted.

Hope this help.

This happens especially with .avi files. Explorer goes looking in them
for extra info like Artist, codec used, resolution, frame rate and so
on, to display in the Properties. Sometimes this results in it locking
up - especially I think if it is a file that uses the DivX codec that
came out after XP.

You can turn that facility off: Start - Run - Regedit, open the left
pane to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi
highlight it and use File - Export so you could put things back.

Then open further, to . . . \.avi.shellex\PropertyHandler, highlight it
and hit Delete.

Thanks! This worked, although I didn't quite understand
where I was supposed to export to or what I was supposed
to be puting back. I just deleted the propertyhandler
and then I could delete the file.

Umn, now I have no sound on my media. How do I get it
back? I'm assuming it has something to do with the
exporting.

Zak.

Argh. I guess I was supposed to export that stuff
temporarily, so that I could put it back after I had
deleted the file? What can I do now since I didn't
export it and just deleted the propertyhandler?

Zak.
