File Attributes - Read-Only - Grey Checkbox ?

I was trying to change the File attributes from "Read-only"
and there was a "grey" check mark in the checkbox ... I
could chnge the check mark to black then disappeared and
apply to the file, but once I close the properties box and
reopen it the grey checkmark is still there and the file is
still read-only. Any ideas? What is the significance of the
"grey" checkmark?

It can't say if it's set or not. Because some files are set and some aren't, or you tried to apply it to a folder in which case it applies to the contents..
