file associations

Can anybody please help

I'm on XP Home Edition and have mixed up l my file and
folder associations. I cannot even download Acrobat
reader.

I cannot use system restore as this happened sometime ago.
And I cannot make any sence of Dr Watson though this was
fine when I had Millenium Edition.
