File associations in XP

I recently installed a new MOBO with onboard sound and found the Audio
player was inadequate.

I now have the option of using either the latest Winamp or Nero Media
Player.

Unfortunately, with either, the file type in Explorer shows as 'Winamp Media
File' or 'NeroMediaPlayer media file' for all audio extensions and there is
no way in Explorer to distinguish which is what.

I have the option of showing the file extensions, but do not want to do so,
as it makes it messy to change file names (as the extension must be included
in the new file name).

I can't edit the type under 'File types', for if I go, for example, to the
MP3 type and change the label to 'Winamp MP3 File', it causes a blanket
change to that name for all audio file types in Explorer. The same with
changing the icon.
I'm sure I could individually rename in earlier OS's, but not in XP - am I
missing something?

You tried selective enabling of file types from WITHIN each application?
Most audio players have such a choice in their configuration or
preferences options.

Thanks, Dev, I checked them both out but it doesn't appear to be possible.
It's a pain having a folder with mixed MP3 & wave files and they are all
only listed as 'Winamp Media File' or 'NeroMediaPlayer media file'.
There must be some solution.
