file association icons

I am sure that this has been asked a million times, but please humour me

I have installed Illustrator
All .ai files should therefore have a little default icon. But they don't.
In WinXP it just meant a trip to the file associations tab on the view menu
in a folder.
This has now gone and there appears to be NO way to even make a file take
its default icon

A) Why
B) Is this yet another nanny state 'feature' by Microsoft
C) When will it be put back into the OS
D) How do I get the functionality back that we all once enjoyed - not just
for this one example but for all my icons

Hi,

Same question I asked when I noticed this was no longer included. The team I
spoke with told me they didn't think anyone used it.
B) Is this yet another nanny state 'feature' by Microsoft

No, not anything that drastic. They simply didn't think it was utilized. I
did stress that I believed them to be wrong.
C) When will it be put back into the OS

I don't know if it will be, but have been logging the number of times I seen
this come up as evidence to support my arguement that it should be there.
D) How do I get the functionality back that we all once enjoyed - not just
for this one example but for all my icons

For now the only way is manually editing the registry.

Thanks RIck
Or to answer part of my own question, looks like the only decent way to do
it is Creative Elements Power Tools.

Should be built in to the OS rather than asking people to edit the registry
And this bit of software put back the functionaltiy that PowerToys used to
give with things like CmdPromt Here.

Now all we need is to allow the most highly used piece of software in my
organisation to be used - Partition Magic. It was always the FIRST thing to
be installed when the OS is running.

Then sort out the dreadful ribbon bar in office which now requires MORE
mouse click rather than fewer to do any serious work. I am driven in a small
business by efficiency and removing simple ease of use from the keyboard is
the best reason the MS will not be getting any income for Office from the 24
comuters I run.
