File and Settings Transfer Wizard won't recognize backup.

OK. Here's the situation. Computer with Windows XP Home that we were
reformatting to XP Pro. Ran File and Settings Transfer Wizard. Took the
resultant files and moved them to a network share, reformatted the computer
and went to run the File Settings and Transfer Wizard again. When I specify
the backup files, it kicks back an error regarding the files, basically
saying that it's not a valid backup. We are on the same service pack that
the computer was on before we created the backup (SP2), so that shouldn't be
a problem.

I hunted down the file to decompress the files in the backup and there were
no errors in any of the files. However, there seem to be several files that
are missing and obviously the settings weren't moved over.

Does anyone know if there is a problem with Microsoft's File Settings and
Transfer Wizard as of SP2? Does anyone know how to fix this problem and get
the wizard to recognize the bakup?

There are no "known problems" with SP2 and the Files and Settings
Transfer Wizard. Read the following:

HOW TO: Use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293118

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop and name it.
2. Open XP's Files and Setting Transfer Wizard.
3. Select "Old Computer"
4. Select "Other" and Browse to the Desktop folder you created.
5. The Wizard will create a file in the folder. The file is named
"USMT2.UNC"
6. Record the "USMT2.UNC" file to a CD.
7. When you have installed XP and your programs, open the
Files & Settings Transfer Wizard and select "New Computer".
8. Select "I don't need the Wizard Disk......"
9. Browse to your CD Drive and insert the CD containing the
"USMT2.UNC" file.
10. Your Files and Settings will begin installing on the new drive.

Note:

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the "USMT2.UNC" folder
when using the wizard.

==> Make sure your IMG00001 file is properly named: IMG00001.DAT

You need to browse to the location of the "USMT2.UNC" folder. Do not browse
to or select the IMG00001.DAT file, only the USMT2.UNC folder itself.

For example, my location is: C:\Old Computer Files\Transfers\USMT2.UNC

I guess I should have stated this before, but I've done this well over 100
times. I know how to click on next and browse. I tried that about 10 times,
between trying it with SP1 and SP2 installed. Every time it kicks back the
same message when I select the USMT2.UNC directory. The message is "The
location that you specified does not contain stored information".

Both the img00001.dat and the status file are there in the directory.

I'm completely stuck

I have the exact same problem. Both computers have been updated wit
exactly the same Windows updates. I have an IMG00001.dat an
IMG00002.dat and status file. I've now saved this three times
sometimes with just the settings in a smaller IMG file

Every time I get exactly the same error

HELP! I've spent nearly 8 hours on this so far
