File and printer sharing

Hi,

Is it necessary to have "File and Printer Sharing for
Microsoft Networks" enabled in TCP/IP properties when you
only have one winxp computer (home edition) not connected
to anything else? Is the file sharing feature needed for
windows update? TIA
