File and Printer Sharing

On my W2K pro machine to which my printer is connected, in
Network and Dial-up connections / “connection name”, when
highlighting checked “File and Printer Sharing for
Microsoft Networks” the Properties button turns grey and
does not allow me to go any further. Why does it happen?
How to deal with the problem?

I have problems accessing my printer from my other W95 pc
on my small home LAN. I have posted my printer problems
here and in different groups before as I am fighting this
for over a week now. The above issue is likely linked to
the source of my networking problem.

Any hints? Please

thanks, Jan

There are no additional properties to set on the "File and Printer sharing"
service so that's why the properties button is disabled.

Can you ping the machines by name?
If this is a workgroup, have you created users on both machines with the
same name and password?
Have you given the user(s) access to the shared printer?

Thanks Arild,

Yes, I can ping machines by name and by IP address. I have
users with identical names, no passwords.

How do I specifically give users printer access?
Open Network and Dial-up Connections. It is setup as
shared at pritner/properties.

Additional info: On my W2K box I see one unknown PCI
device on my device manager. Could not find what it was.
Also, my two computers are connected using D-link D-704P
router and the printer worked ok before I attempted to
move it to the router port. Then I found out that it (HP
deskjet 722C) does not work well if not on LTP1. So I
moved it back on W2K LTP1. From that moment on I cannot
recover, i.e., I cannot force the system to print to the
printer from my w95 box.

If you from the w95 computer do a:

net view \\nameofw2kcomputer

What do you get? Any errors? Any resources? You should get a list of all
shared printers and folders (except hidden shares) If you don't get that,
then you've got some networking issues probably related to security.

To give users access, rightclick on the printer on the w2k computer and
select properties, check both share security (from the sharing tab) and
printer security (from the security tab)
