file action priorities

I may not be using the right terms to ask this question - please excuse.

I have googled for the following using several different "expressions"
but have found no meaningful results. Suggestions of a better way to
phrase my search would be appreciated:

I am a new user of Win XP (but considerable prior experience with Win 95
and Win 98).

For *.jpg files, I want to use a particular program to view the file(s)
- MGI Photosuite.

When I double click on a photo file (anything ending with .jpg), the
photo is appearing with "Windows Fax and Photo Viewer" instead of my
preferred program.

I had checked in file types and MGI Photosuite *is* listed as the
program associated with jpg files.

Then, I noticed that if I right-click on any jpg file, the first command
listed is "preview" and not "open". Open is listed as the second command.

I know I have seen previously (but maybe more for Win 95 or 98) a way to
change the priority order of certain file commands (i.e., change the
order so that "open" is the 1st command in precedence and "preview" is
moved to the second spot.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or suggest better phrasing
that will result in a hit with google?

Also, in the file types listings, I can find no entry for Windows Fax
and Photo Viewer and also could find no other program with a "preview"
listing. Under *.jpg and *.jpeg, only MGI Photosuite is listed (which is
what I want).

Thanks in advance.

Right-click any .jpg image, properties, opens with... change, scroll to MGI
Photosuite.

Run regedit.exe
Open to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\
image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview

Highlight it and delete

Mary, thanks but that didn't take care of the problem. Maybe I didn't
make it clear enough but "open" was assigned to MGI Photosuite but
"open" wasn't the default action if one double-clicked on any *.jpg file
-- the default action was "preview".

Thankfully, Alex (see my next message) came up with the ticket and the
problem is now fixed.

But thanks for attempting to help.

That was the ticket! Your instructions worked. "Open" is now the default
action preformed on any .jpg file instead of the previous "preview" command.

Many thanks for the solution. I owe you one.
