Figure caption renumbered each time and not started with 1

I am editing a long thesis and using insertion of auto caption with all the
figures.
However, the capation number never starts with 1. I can get rid of it by
update the code filed (F9), but each time I insert a cross-ref for the
figures, the captions renumber themself. e. g. the caption should be 4-1,
4-2, 4-3...after inserting the cross-ref, the captions change to 4-2, 4-3,
4-4....just adding 1 to itself automatically and happened to each section. It
is really annoying coz I have no idea it is the correct numbering or what....
Any idea?

BTW, I used the text wraping top and bottom for the figures. thus there is
txt box for each figure too.

You should always mention the version of Word involved in a problem, as there are
version-specific anomalies.

Since you use this type of word wrap, why not just do without? Insert the figure
in-line with the text, and center the paragraph.

Also change the caption style to be centered.

Many problems associated with caption numbering (including picking up the caption
for cross-references and tables of figures) can be solved by NOT having the
caption in a text box. If the figure is inline with the text, the caption should
be generated that way, as well.

I am using word 2003 and word xp back and forth. Could it be the problem?
Ya, I am using text wrap rather than in-line. And now I switch to in-line...
I don't have the time to change all the figures and captions. will figure
that later.

another question: even I force the caption to start with certain number say,
start with 4-17 in the middle of one section with \r17 arguement. when I
insert another caption, the numbering changes back to the one without \r17.
what should I do?

Thanks a lot for your help!

In theory it should not be a problem, but in practice it could happen. SEQ
fields can "go bad"; and they definitely have a tendency to get "iffy" when
in text boxes.

Word is removing the \r from the field?

In that case, in order to get on with my work, I might simply create an
AutoText entry from an "empty" caption (label and number, with no text) and
insert that when I need a caption, rather than go over the menu command.

Well, at least insert NEW ones inline with the text...

Hi Cindy,

Thanks for your help, I have changed all figures to inline. it took me a
whole night, but now I think it worth it! just don't have to tangle with all
those headaches!
