in word 2007: if i have captions for figures that are formatted as figure 1,
2, 3,... and i cross ref one of the captions, all works well. however, if i
select a caption, and change the formatting to A, B, C - the cross reference
does not update. rt clicking and updating doesn't work. Ctrl A and F9 does
not work either. Any Suggestions?

Assuming that you changed the caption via the Caption dialog box, you should
be able to update the cross-references by selecting all and pressing F9 (or
by switching to Print Preview and back to your favorite view).

no - that does not work. unless i'm updating the captions wrong. i am
selecting the entire caption, choosing insert caption, the selected text
shows up, and i just change the format of the number. is there an alternate
way to change the formatting of the numbers in the captions?

I think I see the problem now! The crucial step is to click Close, *not*
Insert, when you close the Caption dialog box. If you click Insert, you are
replacing the selected caption, which also means that the hidden bookmark
used by Word for the cross-reference will be deleted.
