Fed up with this problem

OK got one of the DCs upgraded to IE6, (had to boot into safe mode).
I will have to wait till after hours to do the other one, too many people
using it now.
But it does appear to be a step in the right direction. Once I have all the
DCs "updated" we will see what happens.
So I guess we wait till the morrow to see what happens next.
Have a good evening all....yor

Ok the sysvol share is related to one of the updates, it increased the size
of the AD stuff and now I have a disk space problem to deal with.
Fun Fun Fun, Oh Boy!

Hot Damn!
Looks like IE6 was my problem/cure.
I got the the two current DCs upgraded to IE6 last night. Had a problem with
one of the MS updates inceasing the required disk space for the AD data on a
machine with "limited" space left (which is why I wanted to create anothed
DC in the first place). But this morning did a Dcpromo on the "new" one and
after reboot No Request For The CD. This is great. I do not have to rebuild
my AD this weekend. I can go out and play!

Thanks to everyone for their help.

We're all in this together.

I really doubt this is an issue fixed by IE6. It may seem so but if that were true nobody would have been able to do a dcpromo for about three years after Windows 2000 came out. You have a different issue Yor. But if what you have works and you played hard last night I'm glad to hear that.

Any one still following?

Well we seemed OK after the reverse dcpromo. So I figured my problem is with
AD & Dcpromo and I might as well load the rest of the software. So I start
the virus install (same copy I have installed many many times) and what pops
up "Digtial Signature Not Found". Never saw that in any of the other
installs done with the same "read only" copy of the software (note on the
other DCs Virus/all software was installed before Dcpromo was done). Oh and
I ran McAfee's Stinger just before this to be sure I wasn't installing the
virus software over top of a virus.

So I go to MS to get more patches and what do you know, "Digtial Signature
Not Found". !!!!!!

And as stated already, This is not just one random machine, it is every DC I
try to create. These machines can no longer recognize a file's authority,
hence windows file protection wanting to replace everything all the time.

I would pull my hair out if I had any left.
So anyone still with me? Any more ideas.

If you're experiencing all the same problems on all your servers, and
they are all installed from the same media, perhaps your CD is kaput.
Try a different CD if you have one, or try to get it exchanged from
Microsoft.

Well I am still keeping an eye on it.
But one common thread points to the encryption/secruity level (i.e.
Signatures Not Found, thus FRS wanting to replace things) which points to IE
does it not? As IE is now used for everything, (i.e. To List a Directory or
to copy files or just to display the desktop). And it (dcpromo) may have
worked without IE 6 pervious to one of the other SPs that have been added to
the mix. Yes?
And when most others have done their updates they would have done the
browser also. Yes? So how many Win2K ADs would there be with SP4 and still
IE 5.0 ??
I had avoided an IE upgrade as I had experienced problems with IE6 when it
first came out and did not want to compromise my servers for a "Web Browser"
enhancement. After all who does surfing from a production server?

Right I doubt many do. All service packs after 2 upgrade IE 5.01 to some extant. SP4 puts IE 5.01 at SP4. You should have been able to stay with 5.01 for the life of the server. IE 6 can cause issues but on a Server I doubt any that you would see right off. The trouble is that IE 5.01 is really worthless on Microsoft's website. So IE 5.5 SP2 would be my minimum. IE 6 well not here and is not installed on any of our production servers. But I never install a Service Pack on Windows 2000 without first returning the IE upgrade back to 5.01. Then I isnatall the Windows 2000 Service Pack. Then I re-upgrade the browser. This allows the greatest flexibility which is nixed by installing a Windows 2000 Service Pack over an upgraded browser. We never do that.

Back to square one. After a few more reboots (production server so can not
reboot when ever I like) we are back to insert the CD again.
Curse this!
So any Ideas what to look at next? Please.....

I'm going to have to recommend you call Microsoft and fork over the $275.
I'm out of ideas.

What if he just tried turning off System File Protection? At least then he'd know that was the issue if the the problem continued. What I would do if this fixed the problem is put the Windows 2000 CD-ROM on the hard drive and the Service Pack and point the registry to those locations. (Remember one up from i386). Then the darn thing will get what it needs whenever it feels like it. That's a workaround I know. But it might work.

What is the exact message that you get? (You've probably posted it
before).

Two messages that crop up all the time:
During install I get "Digtial Signature not found", and/or "Unknown software
package" when checking for an MS signature. Same files that other machines
have no problem with.
And upon Boot up I am told that some files need to be replaced and requested
to put in the Windows CD.
Happens on all servers I have run dcpromo on.

Has anyone pointed this out to you? (Sorry, came in late)

Thanks, I checked it out. Ours was set to Warn and allow. I reset to silent,
as per the Doc. But still no change.
