Fed Up With IE's Image Problems.

E

Eric

You would never think that updating your windows
with "critical" and "recommended" updates would actually
screw up your computer and make it less stable.

Here's my situation.

I have Windows XP Home Edition,
512 Ram
40 gig hd
Geforce 4 ti 4200 (latest drivers)
Pentium 4 2.0 GHZ

I had to reformat my computer recently because I was so
sick of the problems I was having, and NOT ONE
DAMN "SOLUTION" that Microsoft posted or tutorial they
put on their website worked or solved ANYTHING.
I had the problem of TONS of images and animations not
showing up at all (red X's EVERYWHERE) in Internet
Explorer. Now, I'm not a novice when it comes to
computers, I did extensive researching and called many
technical support places and none were able to provide me
with a solution. I've gone from clearing my Internet
Cache and making sure "enable images" was check in the
Advanced tab of Internet options, to going through my
registry while reading instructions on some website. I
just couldn't take it anymore. Nothing worked. No, it
wasn't viruses, and No it wasn't spy/adware. I have
Norton Antivirus 2004 with Auto-Protect on, and the
latest definitions, Adaware 6.0, Spybot Search and
Destroy 1.3 with latest definitions, and Webroot's
SpySweeper 3.0 Retail with latest definitions. So I said
to myself, you know what, fine. I'm going to reformat the
computer and say the hell with it. I'm sick of looking
for a fix for this, no one will help me. The problem was
fixed.

BUT, it has returned again. I don't understand it. It's
not as bad as it was before, but it's how it started the
last time, little by little. I cannot see basic .gif
images and advertisements on webpages show up as "Action
Canceled" or "Page cannot be displayed" along with other
pictures, and the font on some pages is a crappy font and
not of the website's originality. Here are some
screenshots that I took to help you better understand
what the sites look like:

I have tried so many tutorials and tweaks and suggested
resolutions. Please, for the love of God, someone help me
out here. I can't take it anymore!

Thank you very much,
Eric

Hi,
It's possible that another program is blocking these images- a security
program, ad-blocker, firewall, etc. What's running in the background? Are
you running a HOSTS file?

What's a Host file. I only have NAV 2004 Auto Protect
running. I disabled script blocking but I do remember
seeing something about a HOSTS file. What is it?

Your problem can be caused by two unrelated problems:

1. If your ISP is having problems reliably sending data, then
you will get garbled info from the net. This usually shows
up as corruption on websites -- and can *include* the very
problems you are having with partial website response.

Things to check:

a) Confirm you are running the latest motherboard chipset
drivers. This is *not* an option. Every piece of hardware
in your machine depends upon the chipset drivers to ensure
those pieces of hardware co-operate instead of compete
for CPU access. Bad or missing chipset drivers cause the
very problems you describe.

b) The chipset drivers are the first thing installed after the
base-install of XP. They are installed before you go on
the net, before you hook up your network cable, before
you do *anything* else.

c) Once you have the chipset drivers installed, then you need
to install whatever LAN or MODEM drivers are required to
permit your machine to connect to the net. The ones
supplied with Windows may be buggy -- so you need to
check with the hardware manufacturer to confirm you are
using the latest-'n-greatest for your LAN/Modem hardware.

d) If you are running ADSL or Cable hi-speed internet access,
then you need a Hardware Router. In today's poisonous
internet environment, you do *not* get the luxury of working
on the net without protection. You will be infected before
you ever get a chance to get the patches installed.

I have seen systems compromised in as little as 6-minutes
after their first connection to the net. Only a Hardware Router
can protect you during those critical times while you get the
base Windows XP updates.

e) With the base Windows XP install updated with all the "Critical"
updates from the Windows Update site -- you then need to
review the "Recommended" Updates. This is a common failing.
You need all of these -- with the possible exception of the dotNet
update.

f) With your XP install now updated with everything MS currently
has for your OS -- you are finally ready to install all the rest of
your software.

g) Things to avoid: Stay AWAY from non-commercial and/or porn
and or gambling and or anything-weird websites until you *confirm*
the machine is working properly. You *cannot* depend upon your
machine -- even fully patched as it is -- to protect you from the
current scumware on the internet.

Your only choice, until you have a *competent* software firewall
in place *over-and-above* the Router -- is to avoid these sites.

h) Invest in *both* a competent AntiVirus product *and* a competent
Software Firewall. Both these products *need* to have scumware
*and* hijack protection built-in. I recommend the *combination* of
Norton SystemWorks 2004 and Norton Internet Security 2004 for
this purpose. (These programs contain NAV 2004 as part of their
packages.)

i) Please note that the combo above *requires* a machine with a
minimum of 512MB of memory and a 40GB or better Hard Disk.
If you don't like spending that kind of money to exercise your
right to surf the net in peace -- then you can *expect* to spend
your life getting screwed-over by the scumware and hijack
artists on the net. Your choice. (Yes, I read your hardware
list -- this advice is for lurkers.)

j) You do NOT get to pick up your email until you have a competent
Virus-scanner in place. You don't even *configure* your email
program until *after* the AntiVirus software is installed.

2. Over and above all the items mentioned previously, you can
also be having problems with your existing Hard Disk. If you
are seeing *any* kind of weirdness at all during the Windows
XP install process -- where you are getting hangs or stalls,
then it is possible your hardware is flaky in some way. If so,
this will have to be sorted out *before* you even begin the
XP install process mentioned in Item 1.

You will need access to someone who is familiar with the
hardware in your machine -- and who can properly diagnose
whether something is flaky or not and replace the faulty items
if found. If this machine is an older box, then it is common for
these older boxes to require motherboard flashBIOS updates
before Windows XP has a hope-in-hell of working stably on
that motherboard.

And that's just the beginning. All the hardware in an older
machine has to be reviewed for compatibility with XP before
you even start the install. If you have stuff that XP doesn't
like, it has to be replaced. Lately, I've been finding that a
lot of the older Hard Disks of 40GB and less are starting to
show signs of instability when used with XP. (Disk firmware
bugs.) A current Hard Disk of 80GB or greater is a prudent
investment regardless.

There's a lot more to getting a machine *properly* constructed
than simply pushing the XP CD into the CD-ROM slot. I can't
even begin to cover all the possible "gotchas" that can cause
the problems you mention. The above is simply the most well
known stuff that can occur.

For further help, you're going to need to provide the info for
all the various hardware in your machine, along with all the
various driver versions you are using. If following the advice
above doesn't solve your problem, then your next post to this
newsgroup should provide the required info along with what
you've discovered going through the items posted above.

Best I can do for now. <tm>

Hi,
A HOSTS file (no extension- just HOSTS) would be at
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc
Make sure Windows Explorer is set to show hidden files and folders and is
not set to
hide extensions for known file types. The file will open with Notepad. The
HOSTS file can bypass DNS lookup to (maybe) speed up browsing a little or
can block access to selected sites.

There's good HOSTS file information at:
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/
and
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Hope this helps,
