FDD & CD ROM Drives

I have just upgraded tp XP via CD. Now when I click on the FDD and the 2 CD
ROM Drives I have, I am requested to insert a disk into the appropriate
drive. Obviously I can't seem write to or from any of the drives. I can
eject CDs from the drives! Any obvious solutions?

Replace the CD-ROMs with CD-RW.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your post. I have 1xCD ROM and 1x CD-RW. The issue still occurs
with all external drives. SO even if I replaced the CD ROM drive it would
still occur with the FDD and the other CD _RW. As it happens with 3 drives
could they all be incompatible with XP or is there a single issue taht would
effect all 3.

1X ? - Are you certain about those speed designations ?
Are these opticals original equipment - if so then the PC itself
may not meet the hardware requirements for Windows XP.

After installing/upgrading XP you need to systematically update
drivers for Chipset, Video, NIC & Sound. You need to check
your Device Manager ATAPI/IDE category and make sure the
controllers (Pri/Sec) are properly detected. Do the same for
the Floppy Controller and Floppy drive.

When posting about hardware issues it helps to list the basics
such as computer Vendor/Model #

Can't help on the floppy as that should be a nonissue with an upgrade.

However, I've found by new installing XP Home on a known working system, the
old cdrom failed to read. System had Windows Millenium on it prior. Tried
2 other known working models with same results. Mfr dates were 98/99 per
stickers on these cdroms. All recognized by XP, could not read any media.
Ended up installing a recent CD/DVD burner, no issues.
