faxing

My modem and stand alone fax machine share the same telephone line. When I send a fax through the computer to a different telephone #, the fax is delivered to my fax machine. I have no idea if it was also received at the number where I sent it. What could possibly be the problem?

Your fax machine? Explain what that is and how it is configured.
The only way Windows XP Fax could do that is if you are dialing the phone
number of your own fax machine.

Your fax machine detects the CNG tone and answers the call. You
will have to plug the fax machine into a separate jack. It should
not pick up if the outgoing call does not pass through the fax
machine either via the phone jack on the computer modem or the line
jack on the modem. That feature of the fax machine is used when you
coordinate a fax machine with an answering machine. The fax machine
eavesdrops on the call to listen for CNG tones during the first
forty-five seconds of the call. If it detects the tones, it
intercepts the call. If it does not detect the tones, the call is
handled by the other device.
