faxing with windows xp

the long sistance number 1 appears on all my faxes and
prevents local dialing where I have to use area code only.

Click START|ALL|ACCESSORIES|COMMUNICATIONS|SEND A FAX
In the wizard, open the Dialing Rules box and see if a 1 has been
specified. If so remove it. It can always be added manually in front of
any long distance #.
 
Also see your modem's dialing properties.
