Fax with MS Outlook

Is it possible (in the home environment) to use MS Outlook to send a composed
email (with possible attachments) to a fax number, using the dial-up modem
and phone line attached?

When working with my last employer, it was possible but I do know that there
was a huge amount of technology behind it, with break-out to fax servers etc.

I would appreciate your comments.Thank you

Best to ask the experts in one of the many Outlook newsgroups. Remember to
state the version of Outlook you use.

I don't think so. AFAIK, Outlook doesn't know anything about faxes.

Faxes are a telephone technology, faxes are sent over the telephone
system, not the internet. There are some services (don't know
specifics, google for it) that will receive an email from you and send
it to somebody else as a fax.

Maybe some kind of add-in, I don't know. Your best bet is the Outlook
newsgroups that others have posted.

I can send a FAX of anything that can be printed using my Print
dialog box in WinXP. When "in" the app that has makes the Print
request, I just select the FAX modem as the "printer" when the Print
dialog box appears after I click on Print. I suspect that this was set up
during the installation of the FAX/Data modem's driver. Note that this
does NOT involve email or the Internet, but uses the telephone lines
just like any FAX machine does.

Can one receive faxes into Outlook or just send using the method you
describe above?

You can send and receive faxes with XP on the same analog phone line.

You do not "receive faxes into Outlook" - they get received through a
different mechanism.

There are lots of faxing options.

Here is a MS article to help you get started:

I know how to use the built-in XP Fax. I've been using Windows fax since
Win95 ;-) I was just wondering if Outlook could receive them. Apparently
not.
