DSL is digital and can only be used with high speed Internet access,
over a DSL service line.
Fax needs a standard analog voice / fax line. Most DSL 'service"
access lines are usually voice / fax grade lines, unless the DSL
services provides a 'dry DSL' loop (no analog signals.) Can "share"
the DSL line since voice / fax signals are sent over different
"signals." You just need to set up a splitter and a DSl "filter" on
the "fax" split.
Most versions of MS Fax are "usually" not installed automatically.
You need to add Fax from the XP install media.
If the OP is willing to get VoIP telephone service on top of
his DSL broadband internet service, the VoIP will accommodate
FAXing. FAX signals are just analog audio signals, and they will
be carried by any VoIP service - whether provided by cable,
DSL, or powerline broadband service. The only limitation would
be by some sort of audio filtering that eliminates some of the
frequencies used by FAX but not used by the human voice. But
I checked with Time Warner on that, and the sales rep said that
TW's telephone service (i.e. VoIP) will carry FAX.
Otherwise, the OP can just use the voice half of his DSL
line to do the FAXing, with the usual filter on the voice branch
as you point out.
