The standard FAX is a telephone line/modem at 14400. Most
PC modem will FAX and XP has a FAX program built-in. But it
will connect to other FAX machines on their dial-up numbers,
local, long distance or 800 lines. They do not connect to
DSL or cable modems and the Internet.
You can connect a telephone line to your modem in addition
to the DSL broadband connection. The two services are
distinct and do not use the same services.
You can also subscribe to Internet FAX services which allow
you to send a message on the Internet to a company which
will then send the FAX over the telephone to a standard FAX
machine and act as a point for replies to be sent. They
will probably provide a choice of your telephone number that
they will provide. It could be a local number in your true
area code, a number at their area code or even an 800
number.
When you get a FAX they will convert it to email and send it
to you over the Internet.
| Is it possible to install a software fax machine on XP
| with DSL and have it work? and suggestions?
Yes! Use a phone line Y adapter and install one of the DSL filters to the
fax line part. Leave the other part of the Y filter free. That will be the
DSL line connection.
No. You can fax if you also have a fax modem on the dial-up
portion of the dsl line, and you can send faxes over some web
sites that forward them for you. But there is no way to fax
directly over a dsl line.
