Fax & DSL peacfully coexistance?

T

TomJ

Is it possible for win-xp's Fax application and my new DSL internet
application to peacfully coexist? When I installed my DSL software and
attempted to connect my fax modem to the same wall phone jack, I continually
get the win-xp fax monitor popping up on the screen all the time and no dial
tone ring when I attempt to send a fax? All of my connections are good
because I verified that I have a dial tone with my regular phone. When I
open the win xp fax console and highlight the outgoing fax document that I
want trasmitted the 'Restart and Resume' options are ghosted? Does anyone
have an idea as to how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance. . . . Tom

You can not simply fax over a DSL line. There is no dial tone there, and it
can't dial the number. You can fax only if you have a separate fax modem
connected to the non-DSL portion of your line.

Or use one of the web-based fax services.

DSL and a FAX modem can coexist; they do here, using an external router
for DSL and an internal softmodem to access dial-up and FAX.

Is your external FAXmodem filtered? Try that. Filters were likely
included in the DSL kit, or can be purchased from Radio Shack and the like.

As I read it, the RESTART and RESUME features are applicable only to an
outgoing fax that has failed, and resides in the OUTBOX.
Check the HELP file for further info.

Thanks Dev, for your quick response. Yes, my configuration is as follows: 1)
My phone line is connected to my U.S. Robotics 56k internal Fax modem; 2) I
have attached a phone line from the modem to my DSL filter plug; 3) The DSL
filter plug is connected to a shared wall jack. Since I can still pick up my
phone and dial a number I am suspect of the win-xp fax software and its
operation. I initiated this fax form MS Word and I now see this document in
OUTBOX of the Fax console with a status of RETRYING. Thanks again . . . Tom

Thanks Ken, for your response. I do indeed have an internal fax modem that I
am attempting to use, and it is connected to the non-DSL side of my phone
connection using the filter jacks that Verizon provided me. I am kind of a
green-horn when it comes to web-based faxing services. Do you know of a
reliable one that I might investigate? Thanks again . . . . Tom J.

You're welcome. Sorry, no I know next to nothing about web-based fax
services other than that they exist. I can't recommend one, but perhaps
someone else here can.

Try unplugging the DSL side and plug your fax/modem directly into the
jack and see if that changes anything. If not, it sounds as if there
is a driver problem with the computer and you may need to re-run your
install utility.

You could also try running some diagnostics on the modem. Most modem
manufacturers include some simple diagnostic software with their
installation/driver discs. It's worth a try as well.

Why have you 'attached a phone line from the modem to my DSL filter plug'?
The fax modem should not be filtered.
Try plugging the fax modem to the non-filtered jack.

Thanks Ron for your response. Again item #1. I have attached my phone line
to the my internal fax modem which was originally attached to the filter
that Verizon provided. I believe the phone line still needs the DSL filter.
The non filtered jack has the DSL modem attached to it. Verizon supplied a
dual connected telephone jack for this type of hookup. Thanks again . . .

You are wrong. The fax/modem should work just fine through the
filter. Fax/modems use the part of the phone line that DSL does not;
the filter merely filters out the high "whine" you can often hear on
an unfiltered line.

I know a fax modem should work as the OP has it set up. I used to be
set up like this before getting cable.

It could be he has a defective filter, or there are problems on the
DSL line.

The first DSL line I had hooked up I could here constant clicks
occuring and I had to call the phone company out to fix the
line. That was in North Carolina and it took the phone company
there a few weeks to get things working on a preinstalled DSL line.
DSL was hooked up prior to me moving into the building.

They played games and refused to provide DSL access through
MSN and I ended up having to buy DSL service directly
through the phone company and ONLY then were they willing
to come out and fix the problem. I reported the problem to
Microsoft and cancelled the MSN subscription and that created
a billing problem whereby Microsoft (MSN) refused to refund
charges for a service they never could get working.

Go figure. That was only 2 years ago.

Hey guys, thanks for all your help. I finally got this thing to work after I
uninstalled and reinstall the modem thru Device Manager. Something squirlly
going on I guess.
