Faxing in xpsp2 with HP printer?

Hi all,
I've just installed HP officejet 4215 on my XPsp2 machine. I'm having
difficulty with the capability to fax. Is xp configured to allow sending and
recieving faxes or do I need to install this capability (software or
drivers). I am using a DSL connection via a versalink 327w which is a
modem\router. I used this same printer on windows ME with no problem sending
and reciving faxes with this same modem\router. How can I get this printer to
fax on XPsp2? Thanks,

Most likely, either you did not install the correct driver or hp did not make
this feature available in its WinXP driver. Unless you have a separate fax modem
in your pc, do not install Windows XP Fax services.

For sending only, the hp 4215 lets you have direct access to its built-in fax
modem by installing a "fax printer" on your pc. Thus, when you select this
printer from the "print" dialog of an application such as MS Word, you cause the
fax modem in the 4215 to send a fax. IF (and this is not certain) hp elected to
make this feature available in WinXP as well as WinME, it would be in the "Full
Feature software/driver" rather than the "Basic Feature software/driver."
http://tinyurl.com/7x5qg If you installed the latter, try updating it with the
former. You may, though, have to completely uninstall the printer before
installing the "Full Feature" driver. See
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm from MS-MVP Bruce
Sanderson for how to completely uninstall.

Note that the hp 4215 does not permit you to receive faxes on your pc (as you
could with a stand alone fax modem and a Windows faxing application)

Although the same term ("modem") is used, your versalink 327w is not the type of
"modem" that can be used to send faxes using the Windows Fax software that is
part of Windows XP. Unless you have an unusual situation of fax-capable VoIP,
the "modem" that you actually used to send faxes from WinME was the analog fax
modem bulit into the hp 4215, and not the Versalink.

If you have only one telephone line that is shared between your DSL service and
your regular telephone service, you need to have filters on ALL of the telephone
devices connected to the phone line. See http://tinyurl.com/jsjcq for a
description of how to connect your hp 4215 to a shared DSL/phone line. If you
can successfully send a test fax from the front panel of the 4215, at least you
know that you have connected it properly to the phone line.

Thanks for the heads up.
I'm going to try the full featured software/driver install and see what
happens. But first I will take a look at the above mentioned link on
completely uninstalling.
And yes I only have the one phone line used for both, computer and fax.
Thanks for your help.
