I found a request from Eduardo below asking about faxes but no one answered him. I rarely ever need
to send a fax but got a call today that I need to send two documents two hours away, like yesterday.
Is there a free program anywhere for sending faxes? Seems I used one several years ago but can't
remember much about it..Thanks.

There is one built into windows that I always use and it works fine for me.
Look under:

Start / programs / accesories / communications / fax

If it's not there you'll have to install it from the CD.

If you have a dialup modem fitted, you can install Windows Fax. Insert
Windows installation CD. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components and its in there.

If you don't have a fax modem (e.g., DSL or cable connection), you can
send text and some other formats (e.g., MS Word) with various services:

There are free services (not even the cost of a phone call), but I think
all of them add a banner about the service to the fax you send.

HTH,

Okay. Thanks so much for the answers. I didn't know about the one with XP...will check them
out..also didn't know my sister had a fax machine.<G> She's sending the docs for me, but I think
I'll check these out for that next 'rare' time that I need a fax. Again, thanks all.

HTH,
You must be talking about Windows with NTFS: XP, etc. None of the
Windows 9x that I've used has come with any Fax ability.

And, every fax program I've tried, both paid and free, has been a horror
to use -- very nasty technology. Not as abusive as Real Player or
Quicktime, but messing up the computer and interfering with work. I
recall seizing the phone line. Winfax was my first horrible experience
with a Symantec product. Norton Systemworks was the next. They got my
money for three versions of these two programs. They will not get any
more money from me. Ever.

Having said this, I believe that the problems that I experienced with at
least four different fax programs was due to the mode of the fax program
in which the computer is hung up in "answer" mode. In other words,
alert, scanning for the phone to ring, identifying a modem, ready to do
the fax handshake, "training," etc., etc.

I believe that these programs were all just fine so long as I was
sending rather than receiving.

If you're referring specifically to my posting (Michael Salem), there
might be some misunderstanding. I was talking about fax services for
machines without a fax modem: you create the document you wish to fax
(text, or some other formats, particularly MS Word) and send it to the
service, which then sends it as a fax, either for a fee, or free of
charge but with a banner about the service. All you need is the
capability to send email; this is utterly platform-independent.

For a machine with a fax modem, Windows 95 and 98 (and presumably ME)
was supplied with fax software, but it wasn't installed with Windows,
you had to install it from the Windows CD. I don't remember the details.

Equifax is, in my opinion, good, but very far from being freeware.

Best wishes,
