FAX with DSL

Is there a way to use FAX with DSL and XP pro ?
I just had a need for fax today. I'm pretty sure my 56k modem is still installed, but I think everything runs thru the DSL now.
Today it asked use what to send fax, and the only option was the modem, and it acted like it was dialing out to nowhere.

is asked for re your installed 56k modem..

No, not directly. To send a FAX, you need to be able to dial the fax number
and you can't do that with DSL.

However you can use one of the various internet services that permit you to
upload your fax to their web site and fax it for you. Google for them.

If you have a FAX modem installed, you can use that. Just connect the
telephone line to the FAX modem (through the same kind of DSL filter that
you use on your voice phones) and you should be able to fax.

ok my 56k is still installed. actually that's what my DSL is running thru.
I have my phone line in to the 56k line in.
the line out connects to the DSL line filter that splits it to the phone, and the DSL modem.

But there was no connection with the modem today.
what sort of configure can I do to use the modem ? or why is it disabled would be a better question.

Put a splitter on the phone line
connect one line to the FaxModem
connect the other line to the filter and from the filter to the DSL modem

You have cabled it up incorrectly..

There should be a cable coming from the phone jack in the wall terminating
to a dual connector piece..

Into one side, you insert a telephone patch cable with is then directly
inserted into the DSL modem..

Into the other, you connect a DSL filter, and then a patch cable to your 56k
analogue modem.. your telephone occupies the second jack on the 56k modem..

Having completed the above, set up your fax program..

If you can talk on your phone line then you can use a fax modem on it,
too. You connect the fax modem to the same phone jack to which you
connect your telephone. I don't use DSL but a couple of my friends do
and they can still talk on their telephones. The fax modem uses the
same frequency band as for voice communications. Does your telephone
still work?

There is a difference between doing old-style faxing over
voice-quality telephone lines and doing fax over DSL (or Internet
faxing) where you don't even need a fax modem. Since you mentioned
trying to use a fax modem, you are trying to fax over a voice-quality
telephone line, and you still have that service from your telco.

"Today it ...". And "it" is WHAT? What program are you using that is
accessing the fax modem? "... us[e] what to send fax". Huh? "acted
like it was dialing out to nowhere". And just exactly was this
behavior? That it issued dialing tones and you didn't hear ringing
tones, or you heard ringing tones and there was a pickup but no one
answered on the other end, not even a fax modem/machine, or you heard
ringing tones and the other end picked up and then your modem went
silent (which it will do normally after the handshaking tones)?

? Sorry that makes no sense. Please check again.

It's set up the way BellSouth says to.

I used the OS Fax setup.

Hard to believe it can be set up wrong, and working perfectly. Except notable to use the modem as a modem or fax.
I have DSL at 3mbps, and phone while online.

All voice connections should be connected using one of those DSL Filters
(not the same as a splitter always).

So, it should connect as follows:

INBOUND PHONE LINE
|
SPLITTER (could also be 1 of x lines)
| | second line (physical cord)
DSL MODEM DSL FILTER
| |
NETWORK PHONES/FAX lines

Working perfectly except for not being able to fax is not exactly working
perfectly..

The analogue modem and phone MUST be connected through a DSL filter..

The DSL modem should NEVER be connected through a DSL filter..

That is why you should use a splitter on the end of the cable coming from
the wall jack, and connect the DSL modem directly to one outlet, and the
analogue modem and phone through a DSL filter to the other outlet..

If you choose not to believe me on this one, then accept that the analogue
modem will NOT work as a fax device, and instead subscribe to
www.e-fax.com..

Alternatively, you can do as I have suggested, after which you will be able
to set up fax through your analogue modem.. it works for me and many
others..

Your call..

Could be the volume level on the modem got turned down or off (I'd
have to go look up the modem commands, but I think one was AT L0).
Rather than connect a telephone to the "Phone" jack on the modem, use
a tap that lets you connect multiple phones into a jack and use it in
the wall jack. That way the one phone jack gets split between your
phone and modem. When you use the fax modem to dial out, lift the
receiver on the phone and listen for the dialing and handshaking
tones.

If you use your telephone to dial the Regis&Kelly fax number, do you
hear the ringing tones, the call gets picked up, and then the fax
handshaking tones from their fax machine?

OK.. working from the telephone wall jack..

Insert a 'two into one' adapter.. available from hardware stores, Dollar
stores, Radio Shack, Telephone supply stores..

Into one of the outlets in the 'two into one', insert a cable and attach it
DIRECTLY to the DSL modem..

Into the other outlet, insert the DSL filter supplied by your ISP..

Into the DSL filter, insert a cable and attach it DIRECTLY to the 'line'
outlet of your 56k modem..

Into the other outlet of your 56k modem, insert that cable from your regular
telephone..

Now you have a separate route to the main incoming telephone line for each
of your modems, which is how it should be..

What you DO NOT do is route everything through your 56k modem to the main
incoming line..

It really is very simple..
