fax on or off

Just a quick question.
If I want to fax a document to a pc, does the pc have to be turned on in
order to receive the fax? Or, is it possible to turn on the pc, and when
windows loads up, fax will it be there 'waiting' to be opened & indicate so?
win XP sp2-
 
The PC must be turned on.
