Fax Monitor

A

AceH

This is an update on a previous post regarding Fax
Monitor not popping up for incoming faxes, etc.

I did notice something interesting yesterday as I tried
to get to the bottom of this problem. I uninstalled XP
Fax from windows components, rebooted then reinstalled
it. I then closed out all MY programs I had running.
Fax Monitor worked just fine. I restarted all MY
programs one at a time until ALL were up and running and
Fax Monitor still worked just fine. I rebooted the
system and that's when Fax Monitor stopped working.
Obviously something happend during the reboot...any ideas?

No. We really haven't seen any reproducible issues with the Fax Monitor
failing to appear after SP1.
You need to provide a more accurate description of your problem and all the
steps that reproduce the issue. When you say the Fax Monitor isn't working,
what do you mean? Is the Fax program working normally but the Fax Monitor
fails to show the progress correctly, or is the fax program not working
either?

Fax Monitor does not pop up when receiving a fax. I need
to have XP Fax set to MANUAL answer. This should make
Fax Monitor pop up when it detects an incoming fax, in
turn allowing me to click "answer now" on the pop up to
receive the fax. Since Fax Moniotr (i.e. pop up) does
not work for me I have no idea of knowing if the phone
ring is a fax or voice call.

Also when sending or receiving a fax via the Fax Console,
upon completion of either, the Console keeps
displaying "sending fax" or "receiving fax" even AFTER
the operation has completed.

The Fax Console will show you whether you have sent or received a fax
successfully. Have you looked? We need to know at least that much as well as
your steps to repro the problem.

Sorry if I'm not being precise. Example: when sending a
fax the fax console will indicate "sending fax". It will
keep saying that LONG AFTER the fax transmission has
completed. I have to close out the Fax Console to remove
the message. Only when I close out fax console and
restart it will it show the fax was in fact sent. The
same thing is true when I receive a fax via fax console.

Does Fax Monitor pop up for you when you have it set to
MANUAL and Fax Monitor is enabled?

A common cause of this problem is firewall software Trojan horse rules. The
most common is one that ships with Norton Internet Security. Details on that

I really appreciate your effort with this Russ. However
this does not apply to me as I've never used Norton, I'm

As I said previously Fax Monitor and Fax Console worked
correctly for me ONLY after I reinstalled it and closed
out all MY running programs. Then after introducing each
of MY running programs one at a time, it still worked.
It was the REBOOT the made it NOT work.

Sorry.

Russ,
I'm experiencing the same problem:

1. I try to send a fax and go through the wizard
okay, but then after I click finish nothing pops
up. No Fax Monitor. I can see the status of it
if I run Fax Console.

I can also hear it dialing the number
if I pick up the phone, but it doesn't
turn on the speaker itself.

2. In addition, Fax does not follow the dialing
calling card rule I tell it to use. It just dials
the number. But I don't have long distance
on the phone so it doesn't work. Hyperterminal
follows the dialing rules okay though.

I do have Norton Internet Security but it doesn't
seem to be causing a problem:

1. It doesn't issue any alert.
2. It doesn't make any entry in the log.
3. It doesn't work when I turn it off :)

Thanks for any help, I hope you guys are able to
track this down.

(Could it be caused be a recent Windows update?)

Have you applied SP1?

List all steps to repro and see if the manufacturer of the card is aware of

If your Calling card settings are part of the per-user settings, you are out
of luck with Windows XP Fax. The XP Fax Service can only run under the
System account, so per-user settings are not available to it.

I'm not sure I understand exactly. The account
has administrator privileges, and there is a
button called "dialing settings" (or
something like that) that you can
press while doing the wizard where you
can set it to use the calling card.

Thanks for your help, and I hope that I'm wrong
about it being buggy. I didn't mean to sound
hostile.

I had to take it the tech support
folks to get it configured for the wireless
network here, so it's possible that they may
have accidentally mucked with some settings
somewhere.

If I need to send a local fax I'll try it
out and I think there's a good chance it will
work, because I could hear it dial the number
by listening on the phone.

Thanks for your help,
David Friedman
