Fax Modem not able to send or recieve.....

Hi, I hope this gets through now, as I am not used to this type of newsgroup.

I have been trying to set up my Fax which is part of Windows XP.

I have set it up and connected it to the phone line, but it isnt being
recognised. I've had somebody try sending me a fax as well, and they cant,
and I'm stumped as to why it wont send or receive.

Can somebody help? I have this feeling it might be something to do with the
TSID and CSID. I am not sure I understand what they are.

John.

You do have a std phone line don't you?
If the modem is not recognised it doesn't matter what settings you use

In Hardware Devices is your modem shown & is there an exclamation mark next
to it?
On the assumption there is uninstall/remove it and reboot win to allow the
drivers to be installed correctly

Hi, thank you both for your replies. I have checked the Modem, and it seems
to be working and up to date.

As far as the std phoneline, the only phoneline I have is the one that I
have my ADSL connected too. I unhook the modem from the pc, and attach the
line from my laptop which is where the Fax is.

Is that what my problem is?

If so, are there any other Fax Software I can use, I have heard that some
can be sent via e-mail, but have no idea where to look. I really need to get
a fax set up.

Thank you,.

John.

Um, I thought I would give a bit more information. I have a laptop that has
an internal modem, and I connect it via a lead to the telephone connection in
the wall. I Dont connect the laptop to the broadband connection at the same
time, so its only connecting via the modem. Is that going to make a
difference, or is it that I only have a line that has adsl on it, that it
wont work.

Thank you.

John.

I dont use ASDL but as far as I'm aware an ADSL enabled line still has voice
facilities, though you may have to use a line filter

Usually a fax/voice modem comes its own voice/fax software
If you access the modem in the control panel there should be a diagnostics
tab

Go to Control Panel and click on the modem applet?

Yes.

When you have DSL, all non-DSL uses of the phone have to go through an
inline filter. You probably have such filters on all the phones in
your house.

Buy another such filter, and also buy a two-way connector for the
phone jack, which turns one outlet into two. Connect one of those two
outlets to your DSL modem, and the other one to the filter, and then
from the filter to the fax modem.

Also make sure your modem is a *fax* modem. Not all dial-up modems
have fax capabilities.

Do you have a dial tone on the phone line? Plug a phone into the jack
to see. If not, it won't work.

If there is a dial tone, make sure you connect the modem through a
filter, though this won't help with the modem problem. If there is a
dial tone, you can use a splitter to give you two jacks, one for the DSL
modem and one for the fax. Put a filter on the jack that doesn't go to
the DSL modem.

I would like to note; Where I live (Netherlands) it is quite possible to
have *DSL service in one's home, without phone service on the line.
The lines are installed to each home by default, along with cable, power,
gas, water, etc. but you will only be granted usage of these after
signing up for these services.
More of these 'telecom-less' internet providers are popping up every odd
year or so.
They will offer DSL based internet, without requiring you to sign up with
a telecom company for a fixed line contract.
It is therefore impossible to hook up a phone or fax to those types of
lines, as there will be no phone signal until you sign up for this with a
telecom company, which in our case nearly always is KPN Telecom.
It's all about the money. :)

Whether or not the above could be true in your place of residence
I would verify with your internet provider that your DSL installation is
based on a phone service enabled line, or based on a non-phone service
enabled line.

Your point is a good one. Such options exist in the US too (at least
in some parts of the US), but in my experience they are rarely used.
It's possible that the OP is that situation, but my guess is that it's
not the case.
