I HAVE A DELL DIMENSION 4300 W WINxp SP2, It has a Connexant HFC v.90
Fax Modem. Recently I had to send a fax and found the fax would not
train. It dials out, gets the scid number of the receiver machine then
cycles through all speeds and fails to train. I fax infrequently and
had used it ok before installing XP. So I went on a quest for a XP
driver which I found and installed and Dell's utility modem check. It
says the modem, registry, port, are all ok. But it just wont work. I
have another computer in the house with a Supra modem and it works fine
so it is not the phone line,or the DSL.
Dell support was no help, offered to solve the problem for $39.95 with
no guarantee of success but would not give me a tech without paying first.
I tried Dell Chat got someone in India or
Pakistan or somewhere that was very polite but not too helpful, they
gave me the number that offered to take my $39.95. Does anyone have a
modem like mine that works with XP sp2

Try uninstalling the modem, switching the slot the modem's in, and reinstall
the drivers.

The see if there is an XP driver for your modem or try a different fax
program.

Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem incompatibility is not apparent
during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you
first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer
an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error
messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error."
There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem
might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires
enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which
require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best
advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed
on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

I use a Creative External USB modem and it works wonderfully with XP's fax
program. This was after trying three cheap internal modems that didn't work.

I also have a five year old modem on another AMD 800 machine and it works
wonderfully too. The new, pared down internal modems without many chips seem
to not work whereas, contrary to Ray Valentine's opinion, the old ones do.
