FAX software doesn't recognize modem

I have installed the FAX software w/in Windows XP. I am now running Windows
XP 2nd ed. The FAX software says there is no modem connected. I have the
software search for the modem and it says there are "no new Plug and Play
devices." I then went to the self select modem and put in a speed. The
software tells me that there is no modem connected, while the modem, a
Motorola Surfboard, model SB5101 sits right here and is connected.
Suggestions please to get the Windows XP FAX software running.

You have a Surfboard "Cable" modem, not a traditional modem. It's
not possible to do facsimile over a Broadband connection. There are
services that allow you to simulate Fax'ing. I've found it's just as easy
to Scan documents and send as email attachments. Otherwise, a simple
fax machine might be an alternate solution.

broadband modems
and fax modems are
separate and unique
devices

fax modems use
the same line that
your regular telephone
and the answering
machine uses.

however, you might
double check your
motherboard, motherboard
manual or website for
your pc and see if your
computer has an onboard
modem that you can use.

a quick check is to look
at the jacks and plugs in
back of the pc and see if
there are any regular telephone
jacks available, keeping in mind
that the jack for the broadband
is wider than a regular
telephone jack.

if not then i recommend
getting an external fax
modem or fax machine or
both.

having both does
have it's advantages.

I could never get any of the fax software I tried (Mighty Fax and, well,
I've forgotten the others) to work with Windows even using a FaxModem.
Broke down and bought a Fax machine.

This modem used to handle FAXing using the FAX software within Windows XP,
possibly before Service Pak 2 was installed. Never had a problem with it.
Then I had to reformat the hard disk, and I haven't been able to get the FAX,
using the same modem, to work. Other thoughts?'

I just checked the specs on the PC and find it has an internal "integrated
56K Data Fax Modem."
I take it this is the modem that will be sending and receiving the FAXes,
and that needs to be detected by the software.

it sounds like you
found it.

but it is unclear how
you interpret as internal.
you may have a fax modem
card installed in a mother
board slot or your fax modem
is actually hardwired/integrated
with the motherboard.

you might have
to check your cmos/bios
motherboard settings
to see if it requires
to be enabled.

also, if i recall you
may have to select
something referred as
full duplex.

if your internal modem
is functioning then windows
has the capacity to detect
it. if it cannot then you
can search for the hardware.

one thing to keep in
mind is that it functions
on the same line as the
telephone, so you may
have to put a filter on
it or get a two way
telephone line splitter

as the other responder
stated, if you were able
to send faxes through
your broadband modem
then it must have been
via a specialized service
that you should probably
contact the modem maker
or your isp who installed
it.

but it is always best to
keep things simple as
possible and having a
dedicated fax modem
is easier to use.

You would be better off getting some local help with this.
This FAX modem must be hooked to a phone line with the RJ11.
Then the modem must be configured etc, etc.
