Favourites won't appear in IE7 or IE6, desktop items disappearing

I'm running XP Pro and just updated to IE7 when getting all the security
updates last week. After updating, all of my favourites had been imported
and everything was as it was before the updates.
Yesterday I noticed that some documents I saved to my desktop disappeared
from my desktop. When I saved new documents to the desktop, they did not
appear either. However, when I looked in my profile in the file tree, all of
the files saved to the desktop, including the new ones, appeared under
Desktop.
My favourites also appeared on the file tree exactly where they should be.
They were not being recognised by IE7. Thinking there may have been an issue
with IE7, I removed it and reloaded IE6. Still the favourites are not
appearing.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for the tip. It helped, but not in the way I thought it would. I
had to go through and re-add the links to the favourites and the items to the
desktop, but previously the links would not open if I clicked on them in the
file tree, whereas they would after following the steps outlined on the link
you gave.

Perhaps I shall experiment with it more, after making backups, of course.
