Favorite Links not working!

Fran

Using IE6 and XP Home and Earthlink as ISP. I just removed a program
(Earthlink's Total Access) and now only some of my Favorites Links
work...the older ones seemingly do not work. Where should my Favorites
folder be in my directory for the links to work? How to I get them there? I
seem to have many Favorites folders in my directory!!! I need help!
Thanks in advance, Fran

Earthlink is getting to be a nuisance.

They should be in the same place as the Registry entry (or vice versa)

You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

Alan, thanks but I am afraid to start up with registry changes until I am
absolutely clear on what to do. Frankly, I don't know what you mean "same
place as the Registry entry or vice versa!" I am sorry...I have not really
worked in Registry before. I see from my directory where the Favorites are
that IE is looking at (buried under an Earthlink folder), but still my
Favorite links are not working. I do wish that I had more knowledge!
Appreciate your help. Fran

Hi Fran,

The Registry entry determines which folder is the current favorites
folder. i.e. The one that IE will use. You can also see that folder
location if you right-click a favorite, select Properties and look at
the General tab. You either change the Registry entry to match the
folder you want instead of the one there or you move the desired
favorites from the folder they are in to the current folder.

e.g. You have two favorites folders.
a) the earthlink folder (now the current one)
b) the folder that you really want

You can either change the Registry so that b) is the current folder or
you can move the favorites you want from b) to a)
I suggest you alter the setting in the Registry as being the best
option in the long run and if you give me the exact location of the
folder in b) that you want, I will help you do it.

Alan...thank you so much for your help. I am using xp home and IE6. Right
now both Registry locations that you gave me show C:\Documents and
Settings\myusername\Favorites as the location which is acceptable to me as
the folder of choice. However, now I cannot get my browser to open any url
or my Favorite Links! I am sick about this as I need my computer working
correctly for work in the am. Fran

Alan, I bailed out by doing a restore (1 day back) and all is back to
normal. I will make note of all of your input for the future. Thank you
very much, Fran

Fran,

I don't know what "myusername" is so I cannot be specific.
Get in touch with precise details if you want a quick answer, though
it is now 18:28 here in Tasmania and I am about to stop for a bite to
eat. I don't use XP but am vaguely familiar with the Favorites setting
there.
If you have not changed the Registry setting, then perhaps Earthlink
is using the equivalent key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ?
Please check.
If there is an entry under that key, you can:
1. Delete it.
2. Report back if in any doubt.
