fault 0x80040154....Class not registred

When I try to update defender definitios I receive the following message:

Windows defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80040154. Class not
registred.

Can anyone tell me what went wrong?
 
Others who've seen this have said that applying all critical updates offered
by WindowsUpdate resolved it.
