Fatal XP hardware install

Recently after just logging onto XP-SP2 ( as Admin) a balloon info pops-up
in
the notification area and says:
"Installing Sis fast Ethernet device...."
Then after a few second the system locks up, so that I must
manually restart the computer.
The thing is that my "Gigabyte 8S648FX-RZ" motherboard does not have any
Ethernet device at all !
All this happens almost frequently....sometimes before starting XP there are
many sounds of system "stand-by" that i here from the computer case...( the
sound that you hear when put the Computer into the "stand by" mode )
Should i update my BIOS or sth is wrong with XP? Why didn't this happen in
my XP SP1?

The last time I had something similar happen (a few days ago!) was just
before that motherboard died. The fact that you are getting errors
before Windows is loaded also points to hardware failure. You can test
the RAM, but probably it's the motherboard. If you aren't skilled in
troubleshooting hardware and/or don't have various testbed machines
around where you can swap hardware in and out, then take your computer
to a good local repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store)
for diagnosis and repair.

Yes you do! That MB has on board LAN check the disk that came with your
board for the drivers or get them from the manufacture's website. Also spend
sometime reading your manual to see what you really have.

I looked up that model, too, some sources list a onboard LAN adaptor and
others don't. Either way I would re-install/update the Sis motherboard
chipset drivers to start with.

No, There are two types of this motherboard. For sure mine even doesn't have
a built-in physical port for Ethernet in it (How can it be connected to a
LAN without one?) Besides, why does my computer hangs only when XP finds and
installs the hardware? Other times it works just fine, And I am sure by
looking into the device manager, there would be no Ethernet-device listed.

The LAN chip may still be present on the motherboard without the
physical connector being present. I've seen this before. Check the BIOS
settings for the presence of a LAN device and try disabling it.

This question makes no sense. Are you connected to a LAN or not? If so,
then with what device?

There may well not be a LAN device listed in Device Manager if the
drivers are not installed for it, depending on how you proceded upon the
detection of the device. It is obvious that Windows is detecting
SOMETHING and prompting you to install a driver for it. Additionaly, the
SiS motherboard chipset may include support for a LAN device even if it
is not physically present and this may be confusing the OS. In addition
to checking the BIOS for a LAN device, I suggest you update the SiS
motherboard chipset drivers first to be SP2 compliant and then procede.

There is no Ethernet driver on the motherboars installation CD.
In the installation CD, all devices are marked "Installed" .

Thanks for suggestion. But just need a brief help on that.

Do a google search for your motherboard model, you'll get several hits
for chipset driver downloads. Better yet, search/contact the
manufacturer of the system - they may have specific chipset drivers
available for your particular system. In fact, if the problem persists I
would recommend contacting their tech support, they may have encountered
this situation and may have a fix for you.
