Fatal system error I cant get past

Trying to install window xp updates on my daughters
computer that were not installed over last 2 years. While
trying to install service pak update(I had my Virus
protection on) got this error on blue screen: Stop
C000021a fatal system error-windows log on process
terminated unexpectedly- status 0x00000080.Cant get on to
machine now to restore to an earlier date. when try to
reinstall windows xp CD it says to hit F12 when Dell sign
comes up, does hesitate and think for 10-15 seconds
longer but still get same message.

Any help? This is on a Dell computer if it makes any
diff.Right now I cant get anything but a blue screen with
that msg.
