I was downloading the 3D version of microsoft maps and half way through the
download my PC shut off. when I started back it just shows the blue screen
with the windows xp trademark. there is not much on the PC that is worth
saving but my pictures. basically what I would like to do is have my pc
operational with all of my pics. can I install an xp pro upgrade and be ok?
or should I take another route. I did burn a recovery cd but when I try to
use it, it does the same as the normal windows start up.

Upgrade to xp pro,as in youre now with xp home...Home doesnt upgrade to
pro,the upgrade is for older windows OS,you can do a clean xp pro
installation
from xp home.Try booting to xp home cd & perform a "repair" installation, this
way only xp updates are lost.Otherwise, tap F8 at pc start-up,select safe
mode,
enter xp as administrator,repair xp.

In addition, when you type F8, you can choose "last working
configuration...". It might work properly.

Press F8 while computer Starting up til you get the Boot Up options and
select either:
Safe Mode and try System Restore from there.
Or Last Good known Configuration that worked.
If that help then you can rescue your Docs and Pics, if it didn't then save
yourself the hassle and take i to your local repair shop.
Note your Hard Drive may be going bad and upgrading to XP pr will not help
if that is the case!
HTH.

I tried all of these things and none have worked. I have heard of putting
two OS on one computer and being able to access other files on the hard drive
that are not in the second OS. Example Xp Home crashed and XP pro is
installed later. Is this possible?
