While the computer was idling an error/stop message appeared stating that a
hardware or software issue had occurred and windows was being shut to prevent
damage to the computer. Windows restore in safe mode did not work. I tried a
reinstall of win xp pro in safe mode, I selected upgrade instead of install.
The install process continued until the computer was required to restart.
When it restarted the stop message appeared and theinstall would go no
further. I tried to boot up in safe mode and got the message that setup could
not run in safe mode. I am now in catch 22. Can't boot up and can't boot up
in safe mode because the cannot continue un safe mode message comes up.

Can I get out of this? and if I can what can I do to correct the stop message

Hi Jake,
Do you have Start up Menu to chose from if you would like to start in Sfae
Mode - IN MS DOS - In Command Prompt - With Network Command - Last Good Known
Configuration, Chose Last Good Configuration to Start Up.
If that doesn't work try to Start in Safe Mode With Command Prompt and type
the following;
scanreg/restore press Enter and chose to restore before the Upgrade Happen.
Hope that Helps, please write back to the group
good luck

I hope i am responding to the group and not the poster as requested. I do not
have a start menue as the computer is booting up in safe mode the message
that setup cannot continue in safe mode comes up and if I click ok the
computer attempts to start normally and the stop screen comes up. Before the
setup message I tried all the selections in safe mode and none of them worked.
