Fatal Error in Setup

I'm getting the following message when trying to re-install Windows 2000
Professional. Can anyone help me to understand what this means? Do I need
to purchase a new computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Fatal Error: Setup was unable to retrieve the product idenification of the
system you are installing.

RegOpenKeyEx (System\Setup\PId)returned error 2(2)

The D:\1386\NT5INF.CAT catalog file could not be found.
