Fascinating audio failure

I just built a new machine: Windows XP Home Edition on a AOpen i945-GA-PLF
motherboard with integrated realtek audio device

The audio worked fine for a few days after the fresh build. I have all the
correct drivers.

The sound suddenly stopped working and the control panel says "no audio
device present". However, if I run teh Realtek audio utility, it plays test
sounds out through the speakers just fine. So, the hardware is working, but
XP is not recognizing it.

I've tried uninstalling all the game/audio devices, and re-installing them,
but they same problem occurs.

This is an Intel High Definition Audio setup, which I had heard has
occassional problems, but I can't find a solution.

Help please! Thanks.

I have a similar problem with realtek audio on an xp home build on a nforce
board with integrated audio. On boot, the only way to get audio working is
to "kickstart" it through the realtek test feature. I have uninstalled
etc.... always the same!?

Hmm... when I ran the RealTek test utility, that would work, but XP continued
not to recognize it.

I decided to rebuild the machine (grrrr) but so far the sound has stayed on.
