Upon checking event viewer i noticed the error is logging again as before
during system boot up only.

1)Have set PF on Auto

2)using auto setting virtual memory shown as:
Minimum allowed: 2mb
Recommended: 2302mb
Currently allocated: 1535mb

3)tried user set to 3072mb still logs error.

4)no devices shown as conflicting in device manager
5)does the D in the error msg: "An error was detected on device
\Device\Harddisk0\D" refer to drive D: in My Computer?

OK have set the HD to let XP manage the page file.
Have rebooted several times.
No more errors logged in event viewer so far!
Shukhran for your prompt advice.

p.s. the recipes on your web page look good, will be trying one soon.

Hi,
Try this Solus,
Open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] get your XP CD Installation media ready you may
need to insert it in.

Reboot after that, does it help?

Test your Memory Sticks it may be one fault or having dirty bits of data
causing this error.

How many hard drives are installed. Is your main hard drive partitioned?

With two hard drives the first drive is harddisk0 and the second hard
drive, if there is one, harddisk1.

Can you please post a complete copy of the error report?

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

hello, gerry have two HDs installed both partitioned using their respective
manufacturers install disks. one is master on IDE 1, the other is Slave on
IDE 2. have xp installed on both and have tried switching their physical
positions on both IDE channels to confirm the actual HDs are not failing.
The error msg judging by the time of the log is happening during boot up,
and is intermittent, i.e NOT happening on every boot up.
The error msg is:

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Thanks in advance for any help. ps online till 00.30hrs gmt

SLM nass,
sfc \scannow completed system re-booted. ok.

Error is only being logged intermittantly i.e. does not happen on EVERY boot
up.

I HAVE NOT RECEIVED "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error" message at
all.

C:\ is MASTER HD on IDE 1 and D:\ is SLAVE HD on IDE 2 have xp on both HDs
and have tried booting from each HD after swapping their physical position on
the IDE slots, error occuring on both HDs so I know the HDs are not faulty

Have set virtual memory as you have advised.

Thanks in advance for any help. WS

My Mobo is an Intel D850GB.
Have checked the link you posted and can confirm that i do have Intel's app
accelerator installed, which according to the posts in the link can be a
cause of this error log.
I will uninstall the Intel AA program and see if that fixes it, will keep
you posted re: the outcome.
once again thanks for your reply and patience.

Hi Solus,
If the info for uninstalling Intel AA program which Gerry gace didn't help
try to Let windows Manage the PageFile on Both drives (C:\,D:\).

If that doesn't help try the reg file (Note: try to be pateint and wait for
the solution to take effect on your system).
==Copy the code below and save it on your desktop as (prefetch.reg), right
click it and select merge to merge to your registry ===

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management\PrefetchParameters]
"EnablePrefetcher"=dword:00000001

I think the solution may lie in updating Intel drivers.

This message in this long thread caught my eye:

" Re: Event ID - 51 - An error was detected on device
\Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation -

I think I know where the problem is. At least with the case of Intel
based chipset motherboards.

I had been having the same problems for months, and I didnt know why it
was happening with my hard disk since it was brand new. So, after a
little experiment with add/remove programs, after removing almost all my
applications, I came up to the Intel Application Accelerator in my list
of programs. After uninstalling it, I never got any "Event ID - 51 - An
error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging
operation" or "The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block" again.

It seems that this program " Intel Application Accelerator", creates
conflicts between the different storage components.

At least, this was the case with my computer.

Let me know of your findings regarding this."

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/12946/?o=60

Before I made my last post I saw a suggestion that the problem applied
to certain Intel Chipsets but I cannot now find the earlier message that
started me on this train of thought. Your chipset is from the same era.

SLM nass and Hello Gerry. thankyou both for your advice and patience i really
appreciate your help.

I have un-installed Intel AA version 2.3 (last updated ver) to the previous
version 2.2 as per a post on the link from Gerry:

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=51&eventno=793&source=Disk&phase=1

FYI this issue, if ii recall correctly, started after i re-installed XP.
Though i had Intel AA Ver 2.2 on cd as a backup and installed on my previous
XP install, i found ver 2.3 on Intels web page and installed that for my new
install, prior to this i do not remember seeing this error.

Anyway getting back to the point, i am now using the previous Intel AA ver
2.2 and have re-booted 6 or 7 times with no new error 51 logging in event
viewer, however i will leave this post un-rated pending several further
re-boots, in the meantime thanks again to both of you and i will update this
post in due course.

S

Solus

WOOHOO! Problem solved! Many thanks to you both. I actually have 2 drives
because due to error 51 i was worried of an iminent drive failure :-(
Conclusion if your using Intel AA Ver 2.3 then you need to go back to Ver 2.2.
Hope this post benefits someone else also.

Gerry

Glad you have sorted your problem.

When I posted earlier I did not appreciate how old your computer is.
There were a number of unresolved issues when Intel withdrew support but
I can not see any mention of your problem.

Tis an old machine indeed!
Cost over 2k when i had it but i only use it for WEB, CD/DVD burning and the
odd word doc, i have never had any hardware failures apart from a HD under
warranty (apparently caused by low level vibrations from my sub woofer
sitting atop my case).
for me the system is still going strong and my usage type doesn't justify
getting a new just pc yet.
