fans not operational

If I use a program that says my power supply fan is not turning and it also
says my chassis fan is not turning then is there any way I could turn the
fans back on without having to replace them? Do they just wear out after a
year or more? It seems like they would last longer than that.

Thank you

You need to ask tech support people for the motherboard and/or power supply.
This is help for Windows XP.

Not if they're truly defective. Rather than relying on software for
this purpose, have you considered actually looking at the fans to see if
they're spinning, or not? Have you physically checked the fans to
ensure that they're not obstructed by debris of some sort and/or
properly connected?

That would depend on both the initial quality of the fans (i.e., are
they components of a bargain-basement brand computer like eMachines?)
and the dirtiness (dustiness, loose pet hair, etc.) of the environment
in which the computer operates. High quality fans, in a clean
environment, can last several years. Cheap fans in a dusty environment
might last only a few months.

If the fans are not running, and you did a physical check or visual check and the fans are not
running, you will have a major failure of either the CPU or Power Supply soon. If you find in fact
(not using software) that the fans are not running, check to see if the CPU fan is plugged in to the
motherboard. But you will need to replace these fans if they are not working. Most fans should
last 5 to 10 years. But cheaper fans will fail in a couple of years. The PS fan can be replace by
a technically savvy person, but otherwise you buy a new power supply. The CPU fan and any chassis
fan can be quickly replaced by the average user. Any computer supply store will have fans for you.

Remember if the average fan life is 6 years and one fan goes for 11 years, then one fan has to fail
in one year to make the average.

I'd ditch the software - if your fans aren't turning, your computer probably
would have fried already and you would not be sending this question.

Trust your ears and eyes.

uh, have you opened up your pc and taken a look to see if those little fans
blades are spinning? Are the fan wires plugged into the motherboard? have
you checked out you cmos/bios settings to ensure the fan options are
appropriately selected? usually high end motherboards like pentium 4's
generate lots of heat and are designed to manage several fans from the
motherboard. hmm, does your motherboard support fans? you may only have a
cpu fan, in which case your fan issues may not be the problem you suspect.

oh yeh, like the others have stated. if your power supply fan wasn't
working, the power supply would be fried by now....
