False 'out of disk space' error when copying large (multi-Gb) files between hard-drives

An issue I often see is when I want to copy a very large file (of the order
of 5-10Gb) from one hard drive to another, the copy operation fails,
informing me that I don't have enough disk space, even though there is more
ample space on both the source and destination drives (more than double the
size of the file). I come upon this often as we use Virtual PC and move
virtual hard drive files around a lot.

Can anyone advise on common causes of this false error, and on any tweaks I
can make so that copy will work? I've tried things like turning system
restore off, but that doesn't work.

If your target partition uses FAT32 instead of NTFS then
you will be limited to 4 GBytes per file.
