False behaviour in notification area.

Our XP Pro system has recently began to be plagued with false symbols and
lack of symbols in the 'notification' area or the task bar.

I have Process explorer set to run at startup, and it does so, but its
symbol does not appear in the area as it always has done; similarly, the
loud speaker symbol does not appear; and the wireless card symbol is crossed
out with a message saying card not found even though it is working properly;
more worryingly the (McAfee) antivirus shield symbol is crossed out saying
on access scan is disabled even though it is not. I keep correcting these
by disabling and re-enabling, but it always comes back at next log on.

I have scanned with Spybot and AdAware, and found nothing.
The pc is up to date with MS except that we have not moved on to IE7 yet.
I use 'Task Bar activate' from 'Kelly's Corner' as this once overcame task
bar freezing problems.

Any ideas?

OK so I should have searched first...
I've now found the excellent review of sys tray matters at winhlp.com
